Week one begins on the first day of your menstrual period. Conception hasn't yet occurred but your period has just started and you may be thinking about conception. This is a great time to kick start healthy habits, if you haven’t already begun. Try to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, do some gentle but regular exercise, take folic acid supplements and give up smoking, drinking alcohol, and using over-the-counter medications. Rest whenever you are able.
Your uterus has already shed its lining through your period and is preparing blood-rich tissue designed to house a growing foetus. Your eggs are ripening and your ovaries are preparing to release one. If you are destined to have non-identical, or fraternal twins, your ovaries will release multiple eggs.
Sperm meets egg inside the fallopian tube. Although several sperm may penetrate the outside layer of the egg, only one sperm will fertilise it. Here, the chromosomes of mother and father fuse and begin to form the chromosomes of your baby. The father’s chromosomes will determine the gender of your baby. If multiple eggs have been released and are fertilized by two separate sperm, non identical or fraternal twins will be produced. Non identical twins can be the same or different genders and look as much alike or different as any other siblings. If one egg is fertilized and divides into two, identical twins will develop. They will have identical chromosomes and therefore identical hair, eye colour and so on.
You may experience some spotting or bleeding around this time.
