Baby Toys
Many new babies are showered with toys before they have any great use for them. For the first three months the greatest source of stimulus, will be you, his parents, your faces and your voices. Adapting to his natural environment he will spend a lot of time curling his fingers around yours, being touched and patted and learning about his senses.
My Baby Seems Too Young For Toys.
Newly born babies derive great stimulation from looking at human faces, but also from simple yet brightly coloured mobiles. By three months the visual stimulation will be accompanied by touch as your baby is able to stretch out and touch the images that he is interested in. He might experiment with textures and will be greatly interested in basic toys particularly if they can fit in his mouth!
When Can I Start To Encourage Educational Play?
Between five to six months, your baby will start to recognize that one action can have a knock on effect, for example banging a drum creates a sound. Try to avoid toys that require manipulation, or button pressing but simple toys that create sound or light will provide fun.
After six months, hand-eye co-ordination has started to develop. Your baby will enjoy playing pat a cake. He will start to manipulate toys rather than just looking and grabbing. At this stage his attention span will be very short and he will require a range of toys to maintain his interest. Despite this, try to encourage regular play with the same toys. This emphasises the behaviours associated with each one and helps to reinforce learnings.
