What is Swaddling ?

Swaddling is the ancient art of snugly wrapping up your baby in a blanket or sheet. Most babies have a startle reflex, known as the Moro reflex, which causes their arms to flap wildly which can scare them.

Swaddling helps your baby feel safe, secure and stops them from being awoken by their own startle reflex. Swaddling can also make your baby feel as if they are being held

How to Swaddle

Take a square sheet or blanket, lay it out in a diamond shape on the floor or bed. Fold the top corner down to the bottom, so you end up with a triangle. Lay your baby so they are in the middle of the triangle with their neck level with the top of the blanket.

Then take the left hand corner and fold over their body, with their arm tucked by their side, and tuck the sheet under their bottom. Then fold the bottom corner up to cover their feet. Finally fold the right hand corner over their body with their arm by their side.

Is swaddling beneficial ?

According to a new study conducted in the United States at the Washington University School of Medicine concluded that swaddled babies are less likely to suffer from cot death as they sleep on their backs. They also discovered that the younger babies were more likely to go to sleep quicker.
