Stay At Home Dads

There are currently more than one hundred thousand stay at home dads in the UK and the number has doubled since 2005. Some are working part time, some bringing up their children alongside their partners and some bringing up their children with very little support at all.

The government are increasingly looking at child care, paternity leave and child benefits as these become topical issues.

Like many mothers who chose to stay at home, it’s easy to feel isolated, lonely and miss adult company and this can lead to a lack of confidence.

Your health visitor or midwife should be able to point you in the direction of support groups, parent and toddler groups and a list of groups that welcome dads or are set up exclusively by dads for dads can be found at http://www.homedad.org.uk/groups.html

Stay at home dads have been homing vital skills in order to be successful full time parents. They cite the following qualities as contributing to their success:-

  • Planning and preparation – changing clothes, feeding patterns
  • Multi tasking – planning the next task whilst juggling others
  • Persuasion
  • Assertiveness
  • Patience
