Reusable Nappies
Using reusable nappies can be simpler that you might imagine. As it is calculated that five thousand disposable nappies are needed between birth and potty training there are compelling reasons why reusable could be better for your baby than disposable nappies.
Why Should I Consider Using Reusable Nappies?
- Better for the environment (disposable nappies are not biodegradable)
- Better for baby’s skin
- As convenient as disposables
- Can help to save money
What Equipment Will I Need If I Decide To Use Reusable Nappies?
- 18-24 new born nappies
- four wraps
- supply of liners
- cotton wipes
- nappy pail
- nappy sacks
- nappy cream
- nappy pins or nappy clips
- washing powder and tee trea oil
It will cost between £60 - £300 to buy all the equipment that you will need to take your baby from birth to potty training using reusable nappies.
Nappy liners may be used inside the nappy. They are removed and flushed away before the nappy is washed.
Are there different types of reusable nappy?
- Terries/Prefolds
These are basic and cheap. Terry towelling squares are folded into a triangle shape and wrapped around your baby before being secured with a nappy pin or nappy clip. Prefolds are “pre-folded” into a rectangular shape and held in place by a pair of waterproof pants.
Whether you choose terries or prefolds, each nappy will need a nappy liner inside and a pair of waterproof pants outside.
- Shaped Nappies
These are preshaped to fit your baby. They may fasten with Velcro, poppers or held in place with an outer wrap. Shaped nappies come in a variety of sizes from birth and you buy them according to the weight of your baby. Other shaped nappies are one size only and adjust as your baby grows.
- All-In-One-Nappy
All in one nappies are preshaped just like a disposable nappy. A waterproof cover is stitched onto the outside. They may wear out more quickly than the terries, prefolds and shaped nappies and take longer to dry because the whole nappy is washed and dried each time.
- Wraps
Wraps are waterproof outer coverings and is often made from cotton jersey or polyester fabric. They are both waterproof and breathable. They are only washed if they become soiled or wet.
