RCOG Backs Call For Equality In Fertility Services

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) is encouraged that MPs today urged the government for equal and fair access to infertility treatments on the NHS across England and Wales.
NICE guidelines published in February 2004 recommend that PCTs should provide three cycles of IVF to couples with an established clinical need. The Secretary of State for Health then said that the first step towards this was being able to offer one full cycle to all eligible couples by April 2005.
However, irregular access to fertility services is still experienced by couples, depending on where they live.
Today’s debate called for the full implementation of the guideline with MPs requesting a clear timetable for completion to be set out.
Professor Allan Templeton, President of the RCOG says, “We are encouraged by today’s debate and echo the sentiments that fertility treatment needs to be consistent regardless of geography. The College supports the full implementation of the NICE guidelines and we will do everything we can to support local PCTs reach the expected targets.”
