Pre-Eclampsia

What Is Pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that only develops during pregnancy and normally occurs from 24 weeks onwards, although its onset can sometimes be quite sudden.

What Are The Symptoms Of Pre-eclampsia?

Symptoms can vary but normally include:

  • high blood pressure
  • protein in your urine
  • swollen legs, face, or wrists
  • nausea
  • blurred vision
  • abdominal pain

If these symptoms are left untreated especially the high blood pressure, the condition may progress to a more serious condition called eclampsia. This condition may cause the mother to fit which may result in a coma even death.

What Causes Pre-eclampsia?

Unfortunately the cause of pre-eclampsia is still unknown. The best thing pregnant women can do is ensure that they attend all the antenatal check ups to make sure that their blood pressure is ok and that there is no protein in their urine.

What Happens If I Suffer From Pre-eclampsia ?

Women who are suffering with pre-eclampsia are normally monitored very carefully with regular check ups. If you are suffering from pre-eclampsia you will need to check with your GP as to what they recommend you do but rest, relaxation and eating a well balanced diet should help.
