What Is Perineal Massage?
Perineal massage is the massage of the perineum, which is the skin between the vagina and anus. It should be carried out 3-4 times a week, starting 6 weeks before your baby is due, and possibly daily in the last two weeks.
Why Should I Do A Perineal Massage?
Research has shown that doing perineal massage can help to reduce the need for episiotomies, assisted delivery and tears.
What Does Perineal Massage Do?
Doing the perineal massage helps the perineum to stretch during labour. It also helps to familarize you with the feeling of a stretching sensation in this area.
What Do I Need To Perform A Perineal Massage?
To lubricate your fingers you will need to use any lubricant such as:
- Almond oil
- Olive Oil
- Vitamin E Oil
- KY Jelly
- Vegetable Oil
- You will also need a clock to time yourself and pillows to support you
What Do I Do?
Firstly make sure you wash your hands and trim your nails so as to eliminate the risk of infection
- Get in a comfortable position, so your back, legs and head are well supported
- Once relaxed, dip your finger or thumb into the oil and insert into your vagina, up to 1-2 inches.
- Use your thumb/ finger in a sweeping motion with downward pressure. Sweep from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock position and back again.
- As you sweep ensure you apply a steady pressure towards your back pressure
- You can also massage your perineum between your finger and thumb
- You might feel a slight tingling or stretching sensation, do not be alarmed this will help you to recognize the sensation you will feel when the baby’s head starts to crown.
- Do ensure you use plenty of oil to avoid friction
- If you are experiencing any pain, please contact your midwife.
