Reusable Nappies

There are a number of different types of reusable nappies available on the market. If you have decided to use reusable instead of disposable nappies you might like to consider: -

• Terry towelling nappies. These are terry-towelling squares, which you fold into a triangle and secure with a nappy pin. They will require a waterproof outer layer and a nappy liner.
• Pre-folded nappies are pre-folded into a rectangular shape and are held in place by waterproof pants. You will need a waterproof outer layer and a nappy liner.
• All in ones are ready shaped, just like a disposable nappy and have the nappy and waterproof cover stitched together. Although they are quick and easy to use, they can wear out quickly because they have to be washed in their entirety
• Shaped nappies come pre-shaped just like disposable nappies. They may fasten with a variety of Velcro, poppers, or an outer wrap. You will need to buy a waterproof outer wrap to be used on top of the shaped nappy. Shaped nappies come in different sizes according to baby weight. You will need to buy the nappy weight that is appropriate to your baby’s current stage of development.  One size shaped nappies are also available that expand with your baby’s growth,
• A wrap is a waterproof outer covering and is usually made from soft cotton or polyester material. It should be waterproof and breathable. Wash them only when they become wet or soiled.
• Nappy liners can be used as they can be flushed away after use and mean that nappies do not need to be washed so regularly.
• If you are using nappies that do not have Velcro or poppers, you’ll need to invest in nappy clips, pins or grips
• A nappy pail (bucket with lid) is a useful way to store dirty nappies prior to washing.
• Wash nappies in non-biological washing powder, adding nappy sanitiser or a few drops or Tea Tree oil to kill germs and odours if required.
