Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching on the 31st October, but where does the word and tradition of Halloween come from?

Halloween is an ancient holiday known as Samhain which marks the Celtic new year. It is also comes from all Hallows Eve which has its origins from the Catholic Church.

It was believed that spirits who had died during the year would come back to look for bodies to possess. So the living on the 31st October would dress up in ghoulish costumes and walk round their villages in order to put the spirits off.

Trick or treating has become a big part of Halloween, so ensure that your child is careful here are a few trick or treat safety tips.

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat is fun for children but adults need to look at the safety of their child when going out. Here are a few pointers:

  • With dark nights drawing in, most costumes tend to be dark, make sure that your child can be seen with torches, flashing lights or an adult in light clothing.
  • Check your child’s costume does not drag on the floor as they might trip on it
  • Ensure child is accompanied by an adult or older child.
  • Make sure your child goes out with a group of others if not accompanied by an adult
  • Unless you are taking your child to houses of people you know, check the sweets before your child eats them
  • Set a time limit, do not trick or treat after 9pm
  • Make sure your child goes to the bathroom before leaving the house, as you do not want to be half way round and they need to go
  • Make sure they are wearing comfortable shoes
  • Ensure that your child can see through any mask they maybe wearing
