There are many foods that you should avoid when pregnant as they can cause salmonella, listeria or toxoplasmosis.

What Foods Cause Salmonella?

  • raw or runny eggs
  • mayonnaise made with raw egg
  • raw or undercooked meat

What Foods Cause Listeria?

  • liver and liver pate
  • unpasteurized dairy products: ripened soft cheeses like brie, camembert and blue veined cheeses.
  • unpasteurized milk
  • unheated cooked-chilled foods

What Foods Cause Toxoplasmosis?

  • raw or undercooked meat
  • raw cured meats such as parma ham and salami

Other Foods That Should Be Avoided

  • raw or undercooked shellfish – can cause food poisoning
  • peanuts – increase risk of baby developing allergy to nuts

What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella Bacterium can cause food poisoning. It is a risk to both you and your baby because food poisoning causes high temperature, vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. This can potential cause a miscarriage or preterm labour.

What Is Listeria?

Listeriosis is a bacteria that causes a mild flu like illness in the mother. This can lead to a miscarriage or stillbirth.

What Is Toxoplasmosis?

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the toxoplasma parasite. It is usually symptomless apart from mild flu symptoms. Toxoplasmosis can cause serious problems for the baby.
