Colic

What Is Colic?

Colic is often caused by tummy aches, due to wind and hunger and tiredness. It often reaches a peak between 6 and 10 weeks and should be on the way out by 4 months old.

When Is My Baby Most Likely To Be Affected By Colic?

Early evening is the most common time of day for babies to have colic.

What Are The Signs That My Baby Has Colic?

Look out for:-

  • your baby appearing to be in pain
  • screaming
  • pulling knees in towards body
  • clenching fists

What Can I Do To Help?

  • try feeding him but be aware that overfeeding could lead to wind and pain and make matters worse
  • if you suspect that he suffers winding pains after a large feed, try feeding him little and often instead
  • try winding him - half way through the feed and again at the end
  • try colic drops available from most pharmacies
  • try walking - the regular bumping of the pram can be very soothing
  • if you think your baby is over tired, put him to bed earlier than ususal (and before the screaming starts)
  • try a dummy, many babies find them very soothing
