Buying A First Bed

What Kind Of Beds Are Available?

  • while your baby is new born a crib or Moses basket is ideal. Look for carry handles that make it much easier to be portable. Many come with detachable washable covers and cotton or natural fibre linings. A folding stand makes storage that bit easier.
  • a cot is suitable for a baby until they are around two and a half years old or until they are able to climb out of it. Many have a drop side that can be operated single handedly. Some drop sides fold underneath the cot base to enable your baby to sleep right next to your bed. It’s also helpful if you are able to alter the height of the mattress base
  • a cot bed is good value for money. It is a larger convertible cot that turns into a bed, Some have drawers and storage space underneath. Protective teething rails are often fitted as standard.
  • a travel cot is worth considering if you and your family travel frequently

Are There Any Safety Issues I Should Be Aware Of?

Check that your childs bed conforms to current British safety standards BSEN1466. Lockable and swivel castors enable you to manoeuvre the cot, but ensure that the castors are locked once your baby is inside

Cot bumpers and duvets are not recommended if your baby is under one year of age.
