Am I Ready For A Baby?

When Is The Right Time?

It rarely seems like the perfect time to have a baby. You might be worrying about paying the mortgage, buying a new car, taking one more holiday or getting your dream promotion. There is never an ideal time but a little pre-planning can take the worry out of starting a family.

It can take months and even years to fall pregnant so in the meantime, before you stop using contraception:-

  • are you in a mature and stable relationship? Are both you and your partner ready for the responsibility of having a baby?
  • are you both committed to making fundamental lifestyle changes. Babies come with an emotional, practical, financial and time cost?
  • why do you want a baby now? Check that you are not resigning yourself to pressure from other people, or trying to aid a failing relationship, or that you want someone to love.

What Physical & Biological Processes Have To Take Place?

In order to conceive the following have to happen:-

  • a healthy egg must be produced
  • a number of healthy, mobile sperm must be produced
  • sperm and egg must meet  to allow fertilisation to occur in in the fallopian tubes
  • the fertilised egg must implant itself in the lining of the uterus and develop into an embryo

There are risks at every stage of this process. Even when embryos do form, forty per cent of pregnancies miscarry within the early weeks. A late of heavy period can be a sign of an early miscarriage,

How Do I Ensure That My Body Is Ready To Be Pregnant?

A pre-pregnancy health check can be very useful. It may cover the following:-

  • diet and lifestyle
  • Rubella (German measles)
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (can lead to fertility problems)
  • Medication and medical conditions
  • Inherited conditions
