What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD?)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)  can be characterized by the following behaviours:-

  • Inattentiveness
  • Poor short term memory
  • Hyperactivity
  • Restlessness
  • Fidgety behaviour and finds it hard to sit still
  • Impulsiveness
  • Social “clumsiness”
  • Physical clumsiness
  • Disorganized
  • Sensitive
  • Low self esteem
  • Obsessive

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is an inherited condition . There may be someone else in your family with similar behaviours.

How Do I Know That My Chlld Has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

If your child displays the behaviours described above and you are worried that they may be suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, make an appointment to see your GP.

There is no single test for ADHD and this can make it difficult to diagnose

How Common Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

  • Around one per cent of children are affected severely and it is believed that many more are affected to some degree
  • Boys tend to be more affected than girls
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder children are more lilkley to come from dysfunctional families. This may because ADHD is an inherited condition and parents may have undiagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder too.

My Child Has Been Diagnosed With ADHD. Have I Been A Bad Parent?

No. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has no connection with the style of parenting a child has received.  ADHD is an inherited problem with the way in which the brain works.

Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Treatable?

Yes. Stimulants such as Ritalin can contribute to a combination therapy which is very successful at improving concentration levels and reducing hyperactivity. Side effects are usually minor and research shows that  links with growth suppression and addiction are unfounded. Refer to your GP if you are concerned about your child and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Other treatements include behavioural counseling, stress management and educational support.

Is ADHD The Same As Hyperactivity?

No. Hperactivity is only one symptom of ADHD and ADHD children may not dislay signs of ADHD.
