What Is Sickness And Vomiting?

Vomiting is being sick or forcefully ejecting something from the stomach and out of the mouth. It is not the same as “posseting,” which occurs in nearly all small babies and involves non-forcefully bringing back up small amounts of milk, often with swallowed air It is not the same as regurgitation  which non-forcefully bringing up larger amounts from the stomach. Vomiting is common especially in small children, although typical causes vary with age. Almost all children will experience sickness and vomiting at some stage in their childhood

What Are The Causes Of Sickness & Vomiting?

Sickness can be caused by :-

  • feeding problems
  • dietary intolerance
  • gastroenteritis
  • travel sickness
  • migraine
  • emotional upset and worry

Infections elsewhere in the bodies of babies and toddlers can lead to vomiting. If vomiting is recurrent and the child becomes very ill, the cause may be something far more serious.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sickness & Vomiting?

In many cases a child may be sick once and then feel hungry. However, vomiting may also be repeated and undigested food appear in the vomit. The vomit may be stained with yellow or green bile or blood may even be present. These symptoms are more serious and you should seek medical advice.

What Treatments Are Available For Children Who Are Vomiting?

Try to work out why your child is vomiting and then treat that course. Encourage them to drink small amounts of water, little and often to prevent dehydration.

In severe cases your doctor may prescribe drugs to prevent sickness and intravenous fluids. If the sickness and vomiting is accompanied by fever, rash, diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pains or drowsiness seek medical advice.
