What Causes Nappy Rash?

There are several different causes of nappy rash:-

  • irritant dermatitis, an inflammation of the delicate skin caused by contact with chemicals in urine
  • Micro-organisms from faeces that break down the urea-containing chemicals in urine increase the alkalinity and worsen the rash.
  • seborrhoeic dermatitis (a condition of unknown cause where there's excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands.)
  • the yeast Candida may cause nappy rash, or complicate an irritant dermatitis
  • A condition affecting the immune system or zinc metabolism can be a cause although this is very rare

What Are The Symptoms Of  Nappy Rash?

  • Redness in the nappy area. This may spread down the legs or onto the abdomen. The redness may be spotty or blotchy.
  • In a Candida rash the skin may be inflamed with extra spots called satellite lesions

How Is Nappy Rash Diagnosed?

Your doctor will be able to diagnose and advise you are worried that your baby is suffering with nappy rash.

How Is Nappy Rash Treated?

  • Keep the nappy area as clean and dry as possible. Try to change nappies as soon as they become soiled
  • Apply a water repellent barrier cream to the skin before putting on a new nappy
  • Try to let your baby be without a nappy for a few hours each day to let the skin become exposed to dry air
  • Zinc creams and ointments can be useful. These are available from the pharmacist
  • In more severe cases of nappy rash, your doctor may prescribe a steroid cream or anti fungal cream, depending on the cause of the rash.
