What Are Feeding And Growth Problems in Babies?
Many babies will experience gastrointestinal problem at some stage in their early life, which can affect their appetite or absorption of food. More serious causes of feeding problems affect a child's ability to take in the nutrients vital for growth and development and to put on weight.
What Causes Feeding Problems In Babies?
Depending on the age of your baby or child the following factors may cause concern over feeding:-
- Breastfeeding. Many mothers worry that they are not producing enough milk or that their baby is not satisfied. If your baby is gaining weight at the normal rate there is no need to be worried. Your midwife and health care visitor will be able to offer advice about this,
- Physical complications e.g. cleft palate. These conditions can be quickly identified
- Medical conditions that affect the absorption of food and therefore weight gain e.g. cystic fibrosis, bowel disease, food intolerances and allergies
- Emotional or social factors
What Are The Symptoms Of Feeding Problems?
Symptoms of childrens feeding problems vary but might include:-
- refusing food
- lack of appetite
- colic
- crying before or after food
- inability to gain weight
- regurgitating or vomiting
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- behavioural problems.
How Are Babies Feeding Problems Diagnosed?
Consult your doctor if you are worried that you baby has feeding problems or is not gaining weight
